1,2,3,4; 1,2,3,4,5,6…. Counting into the innumerable infinite. The composer Philip Glass put himself on the map well and good in 1976 with his ground-breaking opera Einstein on the Beach. His hypnotic magnum opus lasts five hours and can rarely be experienced live. The Ictus Ensemble and Collegium Vocale Gent (Belgium) have mastered the challenging score in great detail. For the role of the central narrator, they managed to attract no other than Suzanne Vega, the American singer-songwriter known from 80s hits such as Tom’s Diner. Over three hours is a lengthy journey; the audience can come and go during the (slightly shortened) marathon performance.
