With his hallucinatory composition De Staat (1976), Louis Andriessen (1939-2021) wrote himself into the history books. In the still astonishing work, Andriessen showcased his own vision on American minimal music, where he also threw influences from rock, jazz and classical (think Stravinsky) into the mix. The State is a still current reflection on the tense relationship between politics and music.
